ANA LUÍSA AMARAL was born in Lisbon, in 1956. She is Associate Professor at the Department of Anglo-American Studies at the University of Porto. She holds a Ph.D. on American Poetry (Emily Dickinson: A Poetics of Excess) and has developed her research (with publications in Portugal and abroad) around Comparative Poetics and Feminist Studies. She is co-author, with Ana Gabriela Macedo, of the Dictionary of Feminist Criticism [Dicionário da Crítica Feminista], Afrontamento, 2005) and founder member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Comparative Literature Margarida Losa, where she is currently in its Board of Directors. She recently coordinates the annotated edition of New Portuguese Letters (Novas Cartas Portuguesas), by Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa (Dom Quixote, 2010).


Ana Luísa has published 14 poetry books, 3 books for children, plus a handful of translations, from Emily Dickinson to John Updyke. In 2008 she was awarded the most prestigious Portuguese prize (Grande Prémio da Associação Portuguesa de Escritores), for the book Entre Dois Rios e Outras Noites.

Translated and published in France, Brazil, Italy and Sweden, her books will soon be published in Holland and Venezuela.
