ANA LUÍSA AMARAL was born in Lisbon, in 1956. She is Associate Professor at the Department of Anglo-American Studies at the University of Porto. She holds a Ph.D. on American Poetry (Emily Dickinson: A Poetics of Excess) and has developed her research (with publications in Portugal and abroad) around Comparative Poetics and Feminist Studies. She is co-author, with Ana Gabriela Macedo, of the Dictionary of Feminist Criticism [Dicionário da Crítica Feminista], Afrontamento, 2005) and founder member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Comparative Literature Margarida Losa, where she is currently in its Board of Directors. She recently coordinates the annotated edition of New Portuguese Letters (Novas Cartas Portuguesas), by Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa (Dom Quixote, 2010).

Ana Luísa has published 14 poetry books, 3 books for children, plus a handful of translations, from Emily Dickinson to John Updyke. In 2008 she was awarded the most prestigious Portuguese prize (Grande Prémio da Associação Portuguesa de Escritores), for the book Entre Dois Rios e Outras Noites.

Translated and published in France, Brazil, Italy and Sweden, her books will soon be published in Holland and Venezuela.

"How many truths make up a lie? This is the question a man asks his daughter, Laurentina, before revealing that her true father is Faustino Manso, the celebrated Angolan musician. The man whom Laurentina has always known as her father defends his lie on the grounds that it contained many truths, all of them happy. This is familiar territory for Angolan writer José Eduardo Agualusa, who won the 2007 Independent foreign fiction prize with The Book of Chameleons" so writes Jennie Erdall in her review of the English translation, My Father's Wives, in the Guardian.

And Hans van Wetering starts his review for the NRC thus: "Sinds de Angolese schrijver José Eduardo Agualusa (Huambo, 1960) begin jaren tachtig vanuit Angola naar Lissabon trok om landbouwwetenschappen te studeren, heeft hij een kolossale productiviteit aan de dag gelegd. In 1989 debuteerde hij met de roman A Conjura (De bezwering), waarna inmiddels zeven romans en tien verhalenbundels volgden, alsmede een poëziebundel, en een tweetal theaterstukken en reisboeken. En dat was niet het enige. Hij werkte als onderzoeksjournalist en columnist, presenteerde tv- en radioprogramma’s (over Afrikaanse poëzie en muziek), en begon hij een uitgeverij gericht op Portugeestalige Afrikaanse schrijvers".

PORTUGUESE BOOK CLUB

We have created a Portuguese Book club to give readers in the Netherlands a possibility to get acquainted with some of the best authors in the Portuguese language in a relaxed environment, discussing the books and the subjects they address, exchanging points of view while further learning about literature in Portuguese and lusophone cultures.

We will address books from Portuguese, Brazilian, Angolan and Mozambican writers.

The contact language will be either English or Dutch, depending on the participants.

Film screenings will also take place, when considered relevant:

On the first meeting, the documentary “Ensaio sobre o teatro” (Rui Simões, 2006) will be shown, to accompany the debate on José Saramago and “Blindness”.

On the second meeting, the film “The Mystery of Sintra” (Jorge Paixão da Costa, 2007) will be shown, to accompany the debate on Eça de Queirós and “The Mandarin”.

Ir para longe, para o coração dos homens

O mundo ficou mais pobre hoje pela manhã. Morreu José Saramago. Não morreu o escritor, que esse nem morre e há de ser relido e reinventado pelo tempo afora. Morreu uma voz, que a partir de hoje só poderá ser ouvida pelo que já disse – e não será pouco nesse caso – mas já não intervirá nas cenas que o nosso mundo há de revelar. E é pena. É uma grande pena. Porque essa voz presente, ousada, tantas vezes polêmica, não necessariamente diplomática, tinha a beleza e a força do que nem sempre é previamente medido, mas que por isso mesmo abala, desentorpece, desinstala.

Dizer que foi um grande escritor seria tão banal que não mereceria espaço na economia deste texto. Mas talvez valesse intuir o que continuará a fazer dele – sem grande exagero premonitório – um escritor especialíssimo do nosso tempo. Quando as verdades vacilam, quando as crenças vêm sombreadas de desconfiança, quando o cansaço e o desencanto fazem da banalidade o objeto de desejo, quando parecem fracassar as últimas utopias da humanidade, gosto de pensar na galeria de personagens que ele criou, não porque a ficção seja um alento, mas porque de dentro dela esses personagens nos ajudam a encontrar a fenda no muro da história. Não estamos ali diante de um otimismo banalizado, mas a verdade é que, nesses romances que nos agarram pela inteligência e pelo coração, João Mau-Tempo erige-se como herói coletivo na luta de camponeses alentejanos; Blimunda e Baltasar garantem a permanência do sonho de criar; Raimundo Silva, modesto revisor de livros, põe em causa o conceito de história; e inventando sortilégios contra a morte, um certo senhor José reivindica a inscrição de todos os nomes nos “ficheiros” da história, porque afinal o dia só pode ser concebido ao lado da noite, ou de outro modo o presente ao lado do passado.

Eu conheci José Saramago há quase trinta anos, em dezembro de 1981. A observação poderia ser perfeitamente anódina e só não o é porque daquele encontro restou, entre tantas coisas, uma dedicatória inscrita no Levantado do chão que era já uma declaração de intenções desse humanista do nosso tempo. Dizia assim: “Para TC, que veio de longe e que, lendo este livro, para longe irá – para o coração dos homens, para o sofrimento deles, para a esperança que está perto – a futura e duradoura amizade do José Saramago”. Estava ali declarada, apesar do sofrimento, a esperança que ele sempre teve no coração dos homens.

Quisera hoje ter eu podido dizer à morte que tardasse mais um pouco a entrega da “carta violeta” que ele usou como metáfora nas Intermitências da morte . Teria sido um modo de pedir a ela que deixasse um pouco mais conosco um homem que amava os homens.

Mudança no regulamento de bolsas de doutoramento

Até aqui era possível a estudantes de qualquer país concorrer às bolsas de doutoramento da FCT. No entanto, uma alteração ao regulamento limita agora essa possibilidade a residentes permanentes (período mínimo de 5 anos) em Portugal.

Tatiana Moura, investigadora do Centro de Estudos Sociais de Coimbra acaba de publicar o livro Novíssimas Guerras, pela Almedina na coleçção Cosmopolis. Em 2008 foi recipiente da bolsa Prins Bernhard Scholarship para efectuar investigação directamente relacionada ao livro, no Brasil.

"Tatiana Moura é investigadora permanente do Centro de Estudos Sociais e membro de Núcleo de Estudos para a Paz. Actualmente é membro do Women’s Network Working Group da IANSA (International Action Network on Small Arms), a única rede internacional dedicada as articulações entre género, direitos das mulheres, armas ligeiras e violência armada. Licenciada em Relações Internacionais pela Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra, tem o grau de Mestre em Sociologia pela mesma Faculdade e é Doutorada em Paz, Conflitos e Democracia pela Universidade Jaume I, Espanha.

Os seus interesses de investigação centram-se em questões relacionadas com feminismo das Relações Internacionais, novas guerras e violência urbana e identidades e violência armada. Nos últimos anos tem coordenado projectos sobre o envolvimento de mulheres e jovens do sexo feminino em contextos de violência armada, em particular na América Latina, dos quais se destaca o mais recente projecto “Mulheres e violências armadas. Estratégias de guerra contra mulheres em contextos de não guerra”, um estudo sobre o Rio de Janeiro, San Salvador e Medellin, financiado pela Fundação Ford Brasil. Desde Junho de 2008 é investigadora responsável pelo projecto “Género, Violências e Segurança Pública”, uma parceria entre o NEP/CES e o Centro de Estudos de Segurança e Cidadania da Universidade Cândido Mendes, Rio de Janeiro, também com financiamento da Fundação Ford Brasil. Publicou, em 2005, Entre Atenas e Esparta. Mulheres, Paz e Conflitos Armados, Coimbra: Quarteto Editora, Rostos Invisíveis da Violência Armada. Um Estudo de Caso sobre o Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro: 7Letras e Auto de Resistência. Relatos de familiares de vítimas da violência armada, em 2009. Actualmente co-coordena o Núcleo de estudos para a paz e o Observatório Género e violência Armada (OGiVA)."

In today's edition of Público, an article by Alexandra Prado Coelho refers the need to redirect the teaching of Portuguese outside Portugal to insure that it is offered in secondary schools. Extra funding is mentioned to try to bring that about. Even though that is not mentioned in the article, offering Portuguse at secondary level would also be an important step for developing Portuguese Studies at university level.

The celebration of Portugal’s National Holiday (10th June) in the Netherlands presents itself as the ideal pretext to promote a discussion about the historical and cultural relations between the two countries. Supported by the Camões Institute for the promotion of Portuguese culture abroad, in association with the Portuguese Embassy in The Netherlands, Utrecht University invites Dutch and Portuguese specialists and enthusiasts from various fields to come together and reflect on the two countries’ connections throughout history, tracing back different moments when their past endeavours, global context and shared interests have brought them together.

This diachronic expedition will progressively lead the debate to the present day, always emphasizing mutual influences, preserved and continually renewed cultural links, as well as encouraging a digression through Portuguese literary and artistic manifestations in contemporary Dutch society.

This paper intervenes in contemporary discussions of World Literature in the Anglo-American academy, which frequently reference Goethe, Marx and Engels, and later Auerbach from the German speaking World. With the inclusion of Hermann Hesseʼs conceptualization of a library of world literature in his essay, “Eine Bibliothek der Welt Literatur” (1929), the paper spotlights a hitherto under-discussed text, which proposes new standards of world literary comparison in the 20th century. The paper makes a case for comparative examination of World literatures beyond the Western literary landscape. To this end, it argues for an inclusion of libraries— private and public—as spaces of circulation, distribution, and classification of literatures. The paper focuses on three key terms: the Bibliothek, the Bibliograph, and the Bibliophile to imagine World literature as a transactional space conditioned by Bibliomigrancy—physical and virtual movement of books from one part of the world to another.

B.Venkat Mani is Associate Professor of German at UW-Madison and faculty affiliate of Centers of Global Studies, German and European Studies, and South Asia Studies. He leads UW-Madisonʼs World Literature/s Research Workshop. He was educated in India, Germany, and the United States. He is the author of Cosmopolitical Claims: Turkish-German Literatures from Nadolny to Pamuk (University of Iowa Press, 2007). He has published articles on cosmopolitanism, postcolonial theory, globalization, migration, language, and politics of pedagogy. He is currently working on a book-length project, “Borrowing Privileges: World Literatures and Bibliomigrancy”, a study on comparative literature and world literature with a

special focus on public and private libraries. Current projects include a translation, from German into English, of three essays by Hermann Hesse on the topic of World Literature, and a new Hindi translation of Bertolt Brechtʼs Die Dreigroschenoper. Recent grants include a DAAD Grant for the research collaborative “Positioning ʻModernʼ Germany: Nationalism and Cosmopolitanism, Colonialism, Migration.”

On May 18 from 14:00 to 16:30 the Department of Portuguese will host two guest lectures by Prof. Ana Paula Arnaut on "O Feminino nos Romances de António Lobo Antunes" and by Prof. Teresa Cristina Cerdeira da Silva on "Literatura: A personagem em diáspora".

Prof. Arnaut teaches at the University of Coimbra and has regularly contributed to the programme in Utrecht. She is a specialist on Saramago, Lobo Antunes and postmodernism. Prof. Cerdeira da Silva, who was in Utrecht last a year ago, teaches at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Having been the first to publish a monograph on Saramago, she has published widely in the field of Portuguese literature. All interested are welcome to attend. The lectures will be held in Achter de Dom, room 0.03.

Mild Manners (Brandos Costumes) (PG)

Like the Portugal held for decades by an authoritarian dictatorship, the female characters in this film are trapped in a decaying bourgeois mausoleum controlled by a dictatorial father figure. Shot almost entirely before the revolution, this film was certainly destined for the censors unforgiving scissors.

The revolution allowed it to flourish and through the inclusion of unforeseen archive footage it became an exposé of the dictatorship and its colonial credence.

Profoundly influenced by Italian Neo-Realism and the French Nouvelle Vague, this is a fascinating, beautifully shot film, with a complex and unusual soundtrack.

'A Fortnight of Portuguese Culture'

As LOST begins its new life in the area the company wishes to celebrate the fact that Stockwell is host to the biggest Portuguese and Cape Verdean community in Europe outside of Portugal.

Over two weeks LOST will be host to a variety of events celebrating Portuguese and Cape Verdean culture. With Theatrical productions performed and inspired by Portuguese & Cape Verdean artists, Music by local singers and musicians, Arts exhibitions by local artists and films in original language subtitled in English.

‘A Fortnight of Portuguese Culture’ will also host the UK premiere of 'Kontinuasom'. This full-length documentary, written in Crioulo language, takes us on a journey through Cape Verdean music. It is an identity hallmark for Cape Verdeans both in the archipelago and abroad. This screening will aim to raise funds for cooperative projects conducted by the NGO ASAD in Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau.

Produced by Periferia Films, Canijo’s new film is a documentary about Lisbon during WWII, when the country’s capital became the frontier between Europe and the American continent for nearly 100,000 people escaping the Nazi regime.
